Sublimation Using An Iron. Is It Doable?
Posted by Kingdom Impact Decals on 11th Apr 2022
When it comes to sublimating, using an iron is destined for a disaster right? Well I thought so too until I tried it myself. Of course it's not going to give you results like a heat press, but if an iron is all you got, it might just have to do.
What Is Sublimation?
Sublimation printing, also known as dye sub or sublimation printing is a popular printing process for transferring images onto fabrics or materials. Sublimation excludes the liquid state and goes right from solid to a gas due to a chemical reaction. Sublimation transfers can be pressed on polyester fabrics or polyester coated materials with a heat press. 100% polyester shirts will give you vibrant color results. It is recommended that a shirt should be at least 60% polyester since sublimation will not transfer to cotton at all. The lower polyester content will result in a more vintage look.
Testing Different Techniques With An Iron
I tried two different techniques. First attempt, I ironed the sublimation by placing it on a heat pad which had a firm surface. The results were not that great. There was a lot of unevenness and fading in different areas. Then I decided to iron the sublimation on with a towel underneath so that it can somewhat conform to the iron. There were some areas that weren't as vibrant due to my uneven pressure but to my surprise, the results were passable. Final Verdict: Can You Sublimate With An Iron?
Although a heat press is strongly recommended, an iron technically can do the job. Keep in mind that the results will not be as good as a heat press.
